I can’t help but think how they have continued to be a string hold of faith and determination to stay alive. The oldest most beautiful olive trees I have ever seen. These are witness trees. They were here with Jesus. If they could talk....can you imagine? They saw and heard everything. Another goosebump moment. As we have moved throughout our days here we seek scripture to back up these amazing places and along the way we sing a hymn or two in a beautiful area of the church, where the acoustics are amazing. Some places we are quiet and just pray or reflect in order to not disturb others. On a busy group trip it is often hard to find the time to do this, but it is so important to pray here. Jesus was here. We are now here. He touched these trees and we are now touching these trees. Next to the garden is the Catholic Church of all Nations. It is built over the Rock of Agony. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_8fc9_9330_3586_19fd" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/EUaWA9p3jSUpUAJQPGz_owj0qWhvCRmMUe4Zfd3JFQmoowXdJek8ZUZQxfo" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 112px; It is actually a Lake. Normally it is 110 feet deep, but is currently 113 feet deep due to all of the two lately. The Sea of Galilee gets its water from the Jordan River, where later we will be baptized if we choose. We walked from the hotel to the pier and all 320 Educational Opportunity people (7 buses of peeps) got on four boats. We went into the middle of the water. Peaceful and as calm of water I have ever seen. It looked like glass and as the boat moved on it it even moved the water in the most serene way. Beautiful and simple beauty. The water was only still. Still. Just like we are supposed to be as we allow Jesus in. He was there. I could feel it. He was all around. This Beauty. Unmatched. The Holy Spirit filling us, within us, beside us. Peaceful, serene. I am not sure if I have ever had a more calming moment in my life. I know that there were rough waters there, but today it was stunningly beautiful. </div><div><br></div><div>The Sea of Galilee is mentioned in 1/5 of the gospels, giving this spot so much importance. Picture the boats here. Picture Jesus healing. Calm waters. Our four boats were tied together in the middle and we had a church service, much like Jesus would have done so many years ago. Maybe we were in the very spot that Jesus preached, where he stood on the boat. I will never look at the scriptures the same again. They are alive to me now. </div><div><br></div><div>We were asked to ponder a few things in our morning. How can we keep our own personal boat smoothly sailing on the water of life? How can we be still and find peace in the ocean of life? </div><div><br></div><div>The boat took us to the Man in the Galilee Museum to see an ancient boat. I couldn’t help but wonder if THIS was THE boat Jesus has been. I am sure he was in numerous boats and I feel like this one was recovered for a special reason. Incredible to think of the water it traveled. Jesus would spend two weeks going back and forth during his ministries from Capernium to Jerusalem. He did this very often ministering, talking to others, healing. The boat we saw was uncovered in 1986 during a drought on the Sea of Galilee. </div><div><br></div><div>Valley of Doves was up next. This area was on the main </div><div>that Jesus travelled. We were asked to think about what we would say to Jesus if we would come across him on this path. This was a beautiful, peaceful area with goats grazing and a lot of caves. </div><div><br></div><div>Matthew 5 gives us the Sermon on the Mount. We visited the Mount of Beatitudes. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. The view was another beauty along the way. I was again so at peace there. My breathing was calm. At home I have had a lot of things going on. Moving and renovating a home have not been on my mind here. No talk of kitchen plans, contractors, floor plans. It doesn’t matter here. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I needed to be far from all of that. No stress here. Just peace. </div><div><br></div><div>Our next stop was a visit to Tabgha (northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee at the base of the Mount of Beatitudes) to see the Primacy of Peter Church. We walked down by the water for a little devotion and singing. If you brought a spouse you could renew your wedding vows as a group. If you had lost a spouse you were prayed for. The chapel area had the most beautiful stain windows. </div><div><br></div><div>Next, onto Capernaum. Jesus lived here for 3 years during his ministry. Matthew 4, 23. While we were in Capernaum, we saw family homes from Peter and his mother-in-law. Jesus stayed there. Some items recovered said Petra or Peter. </div><div><br></div><div>I decided not to eat the tilapia that was caught in the Sea of Galilee for lunch and there was another option. Lol. </div><div><br></div><div>After lunch we headed for the Jordan River Baptismal Site. We were able to renew our baptism by either submersion or sprinkling. We are fresh, new. </div><div><br></div><div>While on the boat today we were told to think about and ponder four different kids of soil we would encounter today and tomorrow. Solid, rocky, thorny or rich soil. Which is your soul? What do we need to provide a rich harvest? I will continue to ponder this throughout tomorrow. </div><div><br></div><div>Another wonderful day here rich in History. </div>SchmidtFamily5http://www.blogger.com/profile/15432229553150836354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34579413.post-3320864108466742652020-01-11T12:50:00.001-06:002020-01-17T07:26:13.921-06:00It’s all about the shawarma Off to lunch for shawarma. We hiked through the nature reserve. We saw babbling brooks and a running river. We saw the very gates that Abraham walked through 4000 years ago. We hiked up to a higher area and we could see Lebanon, Israel and the Syrian borders. Pictures won’t load within my text here, so please be patient with me. <div><br></div><div>Wow ! What an amazing day! We packed a lot in and rode the bus around to a lot of incredible sites here in these astounding Holy Lands ! I have some car sickness issues, but peppermint has been magical and Dramamine. Lol God is good! All the time! <div><br></div><div><div>We left the Bethlehem Hotel early Friday morning to go to Caesarea Maritime. Woohooo Maritime means by the Sea and you all know, I love the water. I couldn’t wait to see the Mediterranean Sea! It was a sunny day, unlike our cold and rainy time in Bethlehem and it was already brightening alll of our spirits. On our way there it became quite clear early on that things were getting more lush and once we got to Caesarea we were told that only the very rich live there. What a change from Bethlehem. Kinda sad, really, to see how much these people had. In Palestine the people there have two hours every two weeks to gather water in their containers/bins and it will have to last them two weeks u til they area allowed to go get more water. Can you imagine ? </div><div>Anyway....back to Caesarea. Acts 10 talks about how Cornelius was the first Gentile to concert the new religion. We talked a lot about Paul and how he was a prisoner and we later taken to trial. We talked about how he just sometimes didn’t get things. ☺️😉 He was later on trial in Rome.</div><div><br></div><div>We visited the Theater here. We had a little devotion and prayer here with all the other EO buses. This company is incredible and so so knowledgeable. We sang together as well. What a sound it was!! Timeline here is 2000 years ago when King Herrod ruled. We walked along the sea where the remains of the palace stood. He has his own freshwater pool. Later I will talk about how the water came from the aqueduct. I found that interesting to see how his pool sat right next to the Sea. The Hippodrome here was incredible to see and it was just uncovered in 1990. Amazing ! It was just sitting there under the sand. I could just imagine the chariot races going round and round in this 7000 person arena. You see this in the movies (Ben Hur) and it this was the very spot you read about in the Bible. Again, we are starting to see the Bible like a pop up book all around us and we are able to see the people there in this land. I am not one with words and it is very hard to describe something so amazing to see in real life. </div><div><br></div><div>King Herrod constructed the Roman Aqueducts in order to get water to come down from Mt Carmel. Later we drove by that area as well. It was just 12 miles away, but in those days that was a lot. The aqueducts were, well, just WOW. </div><div><br></div><div>We then visited the remains of the Roman Aqueduct King Herod had constructed in order to bring freshwater down from Mount Carmel (12 miles away). He used the fresh water for his pool, in addition to providing water for the city, which was the capital of Judea at the time of Jesus. </div><div><br></div><div>Next up was Megiddo (which means “city in the middle), where we saw the 3500 year old original steps to the city. We also saw the Canaanite city gates and the Israelite city gates, and learned that the cities were built on top of one another in layers. After one city was destroyed, the next would build on top of the remains. Reconstruction of the entire area is still underway. It was very interesting to learn that Megiddo was built and destroyed no less than 25 times over a span of a couple thousand years. </div><div><br></div><div>We marched our way up to Mount Carmel and it overlooks the Jezreel Valley(the breadbasket of Israel). I could just picture the battles of long ago and the armies that fought in this area. Elijah’s defeated of the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings’s 18 here in the Jezreel Valley. We saw a trough that was 3500 years old. We also saw a circular area where they had found human and animal bones where they had worshipped Baal. </div><div><br></div><div>Our day ended with the most spectacular view of Nazareth with the sun setting on top of Mt. Precipice. It is also known as Leaping Mountain. This view....the sun setting over Nazareth. Again...no words. Ruthie offered up a devotion to us and left us teary eyed. Thank you, Ruthie for your beautiful words. </div></div><div><br></div><div>We then checked into Club Leonardo, located on the Sea of Galilee. </div></div>SchmidtFamily5http://www.blogger.com/profile/15432229553150836354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34579413.post-10345899570769108702020-01-09T22:49:00.001-06:002020-01-09T22:49:43.530-06:00More pics <img id="id_6f32_53af_bb96_aeac" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/f1iox0kTwy6NfI6NjboHyLcmwvGvt8aJU8RtkmzYLuerz5eapkLiDCm13I8" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 392px;
