Visit with cousins
The kids are so excited any time they get to see their cousins. We went to Barry's parents' house Saturday afternoon to visit with them and Barry's sister's and families were there, too. Logan was sad to miss it, but he was with a Friday-Saturday thing with youth group.
Logan's 12th Birthday Party!
Barry and I took 5 6th Graders to Kick's on Sunday for Logan's birthday. His actual birthday is Thursday. That is certainly a place to take these boys! There is a giant pizza/pasta/salad/dessert buffet and man do those guys put away the food. It has been so neat to see these 5 grow up and remain friends. Logan has known them forever!
The boys did laser tag and video games for a couple hours. They didn't do the bumper cars or go carts since the lines were long and they must not have thought that was cool or something. Fun day with 5 great kids! I know one thing, though. This is the FIRST birthday party of Logan's to EVER have snowflakes outside! Also, I always take Logan's picture in front of our azaela bushes outside and they are always so pretty and blooming. We have named those 2 bushes "The birthday bush". I don't think that the bush will bloom in the next 3 days, though, this year! It is as least supposed to be beautiful the rest of the week, though.

Various and Korea Bound!
Took the boys to their physicals yesterday. Interesting and as detailed as Anna's. Brandon told the Dr. he was "in puberty" right now because his voice was cracking some. He is almost 9! She chuckled and after the exam, she said "Well, sorry, Brandon. You are not in puberty, but your brother is starting puberty now. " Brandon was disappointed and Logan had the look that he wanted to die of embarrassment.
Surprisingly, Brandon's bloodwork showed a borderline high cholesterol. He doesn't eat all that healthy and we have tried to get him to eat better. Now he will have to. Maybe Anna can sway him to the healthy side! He is a skinny little guy,but is growing. His blood pressure was also higher than the doctor would like.
Well, Stacy is coming over today to talk about S. KOREA! She asked me to go with her as she brings home Mason. I will be helping her and be her resident photographer, of course. She gracioulsy offered to pay for my airfare, so I hope I can live up to my job!
I created a blog at the right, so you can click on Meeting Mason and we will post to it while in Korea. She is waiting on Mason's VISA and as usual, there are problems with things in "adoption land". You are always waiting on something and then someone at these govt. offices screws something up. Her VISA stuff for Max somehow ended up in China, not Korea! So, we wait. I told Stacy I need to be home from Korea by May 20 when the kids get out of school. Plus, we leave for Gulf Shores a week later!
We have NO idea and when we would travel and it is hard when adopting and being out of control of things. I remember it well! It is interesting being on the other side of the fence now. You are at their mercy. So, we wait. We are hoping for the first or second week of May. At least we have followed a few Lifelink travels to Korea,so now I need to go back and read them again to figure out where we will be and what we will do. I need to investigate the siteseeing that we will do for 2 days. I guess I am the "Cruise Director". And I can't wait to hold those babies in the nursery like Jill and Angie did. Wooo hoo..... We will be staying in Seoul and will probably be gone a Thursday to a Monday.
Stacy is a nurse and she and her hubby have a beautiful daughter, Marissa, who is 9. I have warned her to keep Marissa away from Brandon. We have gotten together a few times and they have come swimming at my in-laws. Ironically, Stacy was my father-in-law's nurse as he was on his way to his lung surgery in Feb. 2007.

How you Live
I added a new song to the playlist, to play first, that I love to hear on the Christian Radio station. It is by Point Of Grace. We were watching "Idol gives Back" tonight and this would have been a fitting song for the show tonight.
Point Of Grace – How You Live
From the album How You Live
Wake up to the sunlight with your windows open
Don't hold in your anger or leave things unspoken
Wear your red dress, use your good dishes
Make a big mess and make lots of wishes
And have what you want, but want what you have
And don't spend your life looking back
Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances and let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Looking back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live
So go to the ballgames and go to the ballet
And go see your folks more than just on the holidays
Kiss all your children, dance with your wife
Tell your husband you love him every night
Don't run from the truth 'cause you can't get away, no
Face it and you'll be okay
(Chorus)
Oh, wherever you are and wherever you've been
Now is the time to begin
So give to the needy, and pray for the grieving
Even when you don't think that you can
'Cause all that you do is bound to come back to you
So think of your fellow man
And make peace with God, and make peace with yourself
'Cause in the end, there's nobody else
(Chorus)
Quote of the Week
I really should have started a quote of the week a LONG time ago.
Here is one Brandon said...Keep in mind he will be only 9 on April 30.
"Mom, I think I am in puberty because my voice started to change today".
Me-"Did you try clearing your throat? That will do the trick!"
You just have to know Brandon to realize how funny that is.
Another one....from Anna now.
"Can I have a snake?"
We were on our way home from the preschool family nite and the Mobil Zoo was there. Obviously, there was a snake.
A conversation between Anna and Brandon in the car...
A- "Mom, Brandon is talking about BOOGERS!"
Brandon- "Am NOT"
A- "Are so!"
Brandon- "Am NOT!"
A- "Mom, he is talking about Boogers!"
And this went on and on and on and on.

Anna being silly yesterday.
We loved our doctor that the kids had, but he retired. BOO HOO. However, we had an "intake" physical for Anna today at the new doctor and holy cow.....talk about a detailed physical. The doctor was a woman and was absolutely wonderful with Anna. She needed a 4 year old check up anyway, so the timing was perfect. The doctor did a cbc, urinalysis, hearing exam, no eye exam since it is obvious that we are on top of that, iron test and a cholesterol screening. Anna weighed in at 31 3/4 pounds and 41 1/4 inches. So, that is 25% for weight and 75% for height on the American Charts, not Southern Chinese charts. Wow....that is tall. Her legs go on forever. Anna's BMI was 13.1 and unfortunately that is on the 1% and is underweight. She has come a long way, though, in 3 years!
I just could not believe how detailed the appt. was. She also had a couple of immunizations that she was less than thrilled about getting! The boys go Friday and Anna was happy to tell them that they will get a finger prick.

That's our Boy!
Logan participated in the Solo/Ensemble day at his school last weekend. Many kids from all over come to be judged. He sang a solo and also sang with a group of boys. Logan got a first place rating and all the other kids from our school did, too. What was so neat, though, was that Logan got a perfect score and was chosen by his judge as her favorite for the day. This judge had over 50 kids that she listened to and she had to pick one student as the favorite of the day. Way to go Logan! Our school has never had a student picked as a favorite before, so his teacher was very excited! These are a couple of pictures from the day. The first picture is of Logan with 2 of his best buddies. Teddy was born on Logan's birthday and Jacob just 3 days later. So, all of these 6th Grade boys are getting ready to turn 12. Where does the time go?

Had to add this!

We had the BEST travel group in China and still stay in contact through email daily. Here are all 10 of us receiving our babies in China.
I am not a fan of the term "Gotcha Day". To me GOTCHA is what we say when we swat a fly with the flyswatter. However, that is the term that the adoptive community seems to use. So, we can say it is Gotcha Day or Anna day....whatever.
3 years with Anna!
Today marks the day that 3 years ago Barry, Dad and I met JIN YAN YI in China! She was a scared little bundle of joy that was about 17 pounds and 29 inches. We knew that she would be tiny, but she was smaller than we imagined a 13.5 months old would be. The pictures that we had were taken at around 7 months, so we knew Anna would have changed a little and would have more hair!
We had fun when we all woke up talking about that special day and the boys shared what they were doing that day here at home with Grandma Sidwell. It is still as vivid as yesterday! We cleaned out Anna's closet yesterday and stumbled upon the bag of clothes that Anna was wearing the day we met. She tried them on to see how she had grown. She thought it was funny that Hello Kitty is on the pants and Mickey Mouse is on the shirt!
It is so hard to imagine life without Anna in it. It is even harder to imagine what life for her might be in China if she were still there. We are still ever grateful that Barry's sister kept nudging us to adopt from China like they had and she kept insisting that Faith had a cousin in China. We are thankful to Logan, too, for begging for a sister from China, too, Christmas 2004.
That day in China was amazing. When I gave birth in the hospital, I was surrounded by my husband and many nurses and the doctor. When we "gave birth" in China, we were surrounded by 9 other families, the nannies that brought the babies in and it was sooooo loud in that room in Nanning, Guangxi! Many of the babies were just screaming and crying. Anna was as calm as could be until we wanted a picture of her with the man from the SWI. Then she cried a lot!
Anna with the clothes on from the day that we met her. My how she has grown!

One of the 3 pictures of Anna that we received 2 months before we met her.
We soon found out how comforting these fingers were for her for the first 13.5 months. Too bad she is still found sucking on them at age 4!
Here is what I posted to our website that day.
April 4, 2005
The internet connection here in Nanning is horribly slow. So we are not going to be able to load too many pictures from here. Needless to say, today has been wonderful.
Wow! What a day! It is now 9:30 pm here and all is going well. Let me tell you how it all happened. I (Jen), of course didn't sleep well last night. After all, I was having a baby in the morning! We ate breakfast and got things ready to go in our room and organized for when we came back with Anna. We finally went down to the lobby where many of the people in our group were pacing around and anxious to board the bus to the Civil Affairs Building. We left to meet Anna at 10:40. As we arrived on the floor where we were told to go, we noticed that the babies were waiting across the hall with their Nannies in a room. The first girl I saw was Anna....at least I thought it was her. I noticed her sweet little cheeks and knew it had to be her. We were all talking about how the babies all had hair and I told my friend Christie and her husband that I thought I saw Anna and she was wearing red socks. Time at this very moment seemed to move so slowly and we thought they would never bring the babies in! My friend Robin and I had such a hard time remaining calm and just wanted to cry! Barry and Dad were taking some pictures and video.
Then it was time for an interpreter to announce the Director of the Social Welfare Institute and welcome us all to Nanning. She said a few things about what to expect with the babies and that they might not eat very much today. Then it was time for the babies to be presented. Christie's baby was first and then they said Jin Yan Yi and in came a beautiful little girl wearing red socks. I was right! It was her that I first laid eyes on in that room across the hall. She came right to me and was not crying at all......but I was! It was such an emotional time and so hard to express into words. I walked over to Barry to show him his new daughter and what a feeling that was. The seven months of paperwork and five and a half months waiting all led up to this very moment and time was now standing still. Barry held Jin Yan Yi and smooched on her a bit. She still remained calm. There were nine other families in the room besides us and we all had just given birth at the same time. WOW! What an amzing thing to be a part of and witness. Dad was videotaping this "Gotcha" moment through his tears and came over to hug me. Eventually I wanted to have a picture taken of the director with Anna and gave her to him....not a good idea. Now she decided to cry. She quit and it was time to go back to the hotel. She was fine on the ride home and was very quiet and reserved. She found here fingers and was very content with them. They have obviously been comforting to her in the last 13 1/2 months.
When we arrive back at the hotel we sat on the bed and she was content. She rolled over and I started singing "I love you" in Chinese to a tune and Barry joined in. She laid down and fell asleep and took almost a two hour nap. After waking she was a little uncertain, but ate some congee with some friends and loved it. Congee is like thin rice with water or porridge and has some meat flavoring to it. Later that afternoon we played in the hall in front of the elevators with her friends. This is where we started to see the real Anna. She was crawling everywhere and taking a few steps. Eventually all of the families arrived, as did the Assistant Director of the SWI. We were able to ask her some questions. She said that all of the babies were able to crawl and also walk a little with assistance. We were so blessed that our girls came from this SWI. They were taken very good care of and are doing well developmentally. We have gotten so close to all of the families and knew them all before we traveled. All of the babies are beautiful and have the most precious eyes. We called the boys later on and told them that they were both now big brothers. It was so nice to hear their voices and we miss them a lot. We went out for dinner next door to the hotel, but Anna would not eat. She hasn't taken a bottle yet and has only eaten congee, but we are so glad that she ate that. Please pray for us that she will continue to bond well with us and eat more soon.
God has blessed us so much already with Anna and we are so glad that this day has finally come. She has done a little bit of grieving today and that is normal, but overall she has done great. I never imagined that she would try to eat congee today or crawl and try to walk. She is very tiny.!We think that the scale here says between 17-18 pounds, but I wouldn't be surprised if she is smaller. Her 6-12 month pants today fit in the length pretty good, but fall off of her. She has no bottom and is so tiny around, so she can't keep her pants up. She seems tall because I put on 6-9 month pajamas and they were big on her, but too short. The 12 month were ok, but big. Thanks for all of your support and prayers. We have enjoyed the emails, so keep them coming. We won't be able to reply to most of them, but love getting them.
Now as I look at this sweet angel asleep on her daddy's chest, I feel so blessed by God to be the wife of Barry and mother of three beautiful children. I am so grateful to Barry's sister and her husband for persisting that their daughter Faith had a cousin waiting for her in China. It will be such a pleasure to see the two cousins born in China play and grow up around each other. I am also thankful to Logan for putting a baby sister on his Christmas list in 2003! Thanks for all of the prayers and to all of you who are helping with the boys at home.

Another Lifelink family in Korea

ok...here we go
Ok...Barry did remind me that our China site will probably disappear soon, so I am recreating the China trip here on this......http://journeytoannayanyi.blogspot.com/
I won't be posting much more of the trip on this family site, but if you would like to reread things, go to the Anna trip blog. I know that some of my travel mates would love to relive this trip this week, so enjoy. I wish I could figure out how to post our 20 min video. Hmmmmmm...I am not that great at computers!

Angie has Theo
Our friends, the Eckert's, were in our travel group to China and Angie is now in South Korea meeting their son, Theo. Check it out at http://appleknocker2.blogspot.com/. We are so happy for the Eckert's and thrilled that Ella has a new baby brother. He is so cute. It has been so interesting learning about the Korea adoption program through the Biehls, Eckert's and Oliver's!

3 Years ago yesterday.....
Barry, Dad and I headed for China to meet Anna and bring her home to her forever family! I love this time of year as Spring begins and the flowers start to bloom. Three years ago, our littlest flower came home to "bloom", too. I wanted to post what we did in China daily on this blog because I am not sure if our other site will be up much longer with the change in service here. So, indulge me while I recreate the China trip here.
Here is the plane we took over to Hong Kong. It is huge, except for the seats.
Yes folks, that's China down there.
I just had to take a picture of these guys. The different shuttle services have their employees where blazers to signify which company they work for. The company we used had the Illini orange blazers, must be a good sign for the upcoming game.
Day 1 - March 30-31, 2005
Man what a flight. We got out of O'Hare airport without any problems (where we saw Chris Berman of ESPN getting off of a plane), but that flight to Hong Kong is LONG. Fourteen hours long. Joe and I started a cribbage tournament to last the entire trip. After the first day, I am up 12-3 (with 2 skunks). The meals on the flight weren't too bad. Not much leg room, especially for me. Jennifer and Joe got up and walked around quite a bit. The view from the plane was pretty cool, especially over Siberia. Now I know why the Russians used to send people they didn't like out there. It was nothing but mountains, snow, and frozen rivers. We are now in our hotel room in Hong Kong and are getting ready to settle down for the night. We will be adding some pictures to this page in the morning (our morning). Joe's surge protector blew up when he plugged it in the wall in the hotel.

WHAT A WEEK!
It was a LONG, LONG week! I told the Music Teacher at Brandon's school that I would sub for her last Tuesday through Friday. I had 10-11 classes each day with 20-25 kids in each class. That is sooooo different from Special Ed and it is just not really my cup of tea to work with the "regular" population very often. The music part was fine for me to teach, but I don't like having to constantly raise my voice at the class to maintain a quiet and controlled environment.
Some of the kids today are just down right dispectful and I had to have the PE teacher come down because one boy was misbehaving and being disruptive. He was not listening and I placed him away from the other students. Well, this little first grader decided to physically GLUE himself to the cabinet. He would NOT let go and he just needed to be out of the room and in the office. I thought that maybe a male figure would help a little bit and even he had trouble. Finally with the help of the PE teacher and the child's teacher, the little booger was taken to the office for some time of "reflection". He later apologized for his behavior, too.
I am just not used to these behaviors in Special Ed. Seriously...I LOVE teaching and subbing in Special Ed. and I guess we all have our gifts. I went into teaching for Special Ed and now I know that is where I will stay. All but 2-3 of my classes were just fine and the teacher planned some great activities. We have the best music teachers in our district and my boys are so lucky to have these special women to teach them! It was fun playing the piano and singing, but I was on my feet the ENTIRE day and the behaviors of many of the kids are not what I want again any time soon. Plus...my house went to pot and Anna and I were both crabby!
So...THANK YOU to my hubby. I feel very blessed to be able to stay home with Anna, as I did with the boys, too. I will continue to sub a couple times a month. It gives Anna time away from me and keeps my name in the District. The school is always asking me to do more, but being at home is where I want to be. I usually get a call once a year asking me to take a position part-time in Special Ed., but this year they knew not to call. I always say "not until Anna is in kindergarten". I have told them that I might teach 1/2 time after Anna goes to kindergarten, so we'll see. One teacher would like to job share. I told her she could do 3/4 time and I do 1/4. HEE HEE.......
We are so lucky to have my mom to watch Anna when I sub and Barry's parents help out as much as they can. Plus...MY wonderful neighbor, Christine, watches Anna a ton and we swap kids when she subs, too. We are sooooo sad to see the neighbor's moving. WE LOVE THEM!

Easter Day!
Our day started with church and then off to Barry's parents for a delicious lunch and Easter Egg Hunt. We had snow flurries all day and it was cold out so our hunt was inside. BRRRR. WHERE IS SPRING??

Day at the Park
NO SCHOOL TODAY for Good Friday! It was nice out, so we went to the Outlet Mall and then our favorite park. We had lunch and played there for a while. It is finally Spring! Let's hope this lasts!

Fashion sense? NOT!
WHOA...now that is an outfit!
Ok...that's better! A little bit, anyway!
She is dying to learn how to tie her shoes. It has been an ongoing thing for a few months now. She is very determined!
Four year olds certainly have their idea of style! Anna often looks like Pippi Longstocking. And yes, I have let her go to Walmart before in a princess dress and rainboots! Today she HAD to wear her favorite zebra shirt and then she found the jacket, too. It is getting a little small, though. When she was little she would carry around the photo of Faith in this shirt the day they met at the airport upon our return from China. I am not sure how the pink headband and pink crocs tied the whole ensemble together. At one point she even had on pink fuzzy bunny ears from her Grandma Judy. That's my girl! As the day went on, it got a little better. At least the tights weren't pink, too. I am not even sure where she dug the tights out of. They are at least a size too small!

Happy St. Patty's Day and my pet peave of the day!
We are all wearing green today! Anna's preschool has been doing colors and for some reason today is actually pink day! HUH?
That kind of sums up her preschool this year, though, and it is no secret that I am less than thrilled with it. This is her teacher's first year there and it shows that she does not have a lot of experience in early childhood. When I taught at my mom's Day Care, I had a lesson plan book and the day-to-day activities were very well planned out and the lesson plan book was full. If you look at this teacher's plan book (I have since I have subbed there), it is basically empty! Seriously...it contains very few words. That would not have flown when I was teaching Special Ed. We had to turn our plans in weekly to the principal to be approved. I am also a huge music fan and believe that kids need to be taught a lot of music. The current teacher just doesn't have that music ability. Part of preschool is learning daily fingerplays and songs that are different. That helps the kids learn repetition in the songs and build pathways in the brain for learning. Simply doing the same 5 songs all year just isn't what we were looking for.
I will say that things at the Preschool have improved. It is a Co-op so parents are required to volunteer as the parent helper daily. That is nice so you always know what is going on. We turned in a parent survey and I am sure that I am the only one who turned in such a lengthy response to the questions. I kept it constructive and as positive as I could and things have improved. Bottom line, though, is that the teacher does not have experience in preschool and it really shows. Luckily, Anna is fine in the fine motor and acedemic department. However, she needs a lot more in terms of structure and learning how to transition from activities. So, I am sad to say that she is enrolled elsewhere for next year. I hate to leave the friends that she has made, but now she will be able to make more. I know of at least one other student who is following us to the other preschool, so she will at least know one person. We didn't register early enough, though, so we are in an afternoon class. Some of her gymnastic friends are in the morning class there. Bummer.
Ok, I will get off my whining now. I am just irritated and it is the things like wearing pink on St. Pat's Day that sums up everthing. Is Anna getting the socialization that she needs? YES. That was my main reason for sending her to Preschool, but I signed up wanting a little more than she is getting. We go to an Open House April 21 at the new school, so I am anxious for Anna to go to that. We have also visited and feel we have made the right decision. It seems like a better learning environment that will hopefully help Anna more with her squirminess. This will also allow her to make even more friends before kindergarten.

Coldest and Quickest Egg Hunt Ever!
It was about 39 degrees today for the Lion's Club Egg Hunt. BRRRRR. It was also a little windy and sprinkling rain. We were supposed to meet Justin there, but the poor little guy is very sick with a high fever. I am assuming that since the Egg Hunt was at the Lion's Club that is the reason for the LION there. Where was the Easter Bunny....no clue. Funny since we have a costume place here in town. That just cracked me up that the Bunny didn't make his appearance, too. The Egg Hunt took all of 2 minutes and we were off with baskets full of goodies. Brandon was happy to squeak in under the age limit and looks like he can't do it next year.
New Friends
We had a wonderful visit with another family who has a daughter from Guiping City, China. Joelle is about 14 months older than Anna and Joelle also has a sister who is 2.5. Our tall Anna was about 2.5 inches taller than Joelle. Those long, long legs! The family was so nice and it was a great day at the park to visit. They live a few states away, but were within 2.5 hours of here, so I drove to visit them Thursday. The girls were like two peas in a pod and just went off like they had known each other forever. Fun Day! It is also nice meeting other families with children from the same SWI in China. These girls will always share that commonality.
Our Wolf
The third graders had State Testing all last week. In the afternoons, they had people come in and teach them a few things about plays and musicals. They performed their show last night and Brandon was the wolf. He is the most adorable third grader and has them all completely blown away by his personality and cuteness at school. His grades and behavior are so good and never causes an ounce of mischief. He sure does at home, though, but it is a relief that he is respectful to his friends and teachers. And he is getting better with Logan, too. Anyway...Brandon was an adorable wolf and had quite a few lines and then a song to sing ( more of a rap, though). It was a good show and the third graders were proud of their accomplishment and hard work.
